Healing The Inner Child

Divine Devotions, January 29, 2024March 7, 2025

Understanding Your Inner Child’s Healing and Its Significance

Many times in life, I’ve often heard the quoted text “I was dealt a bad hand in life” I am certain that you’ve heard this quote before as well. Throughout history, it has been well proven that our childhood affects our adult life in many ways and for many decades. If your childhood weathered storms good or bad, it has its effects later in life but, I have good news for you today.

Well within your innermost being, lies the power to change the trajectory of your destiny, relationships, family, and current circumstances. If you’ve ever felt, as though you can never get a break from adversity and that life is just so unfair, it’s a lie, my friend. Feelings are merely an emotional state that can be changed by the power of your words and thoughts through meditating on the word of God.

your childhood may have looked like:

  • adoption/foster care
  • physical abuse
  • abandonmentΒ
  • divorced parents
  • no parents
  • emotional abuse
  • homelessness
  • drug addiction
  • childhood rejection
  • bullying
  • sexual abuse

……..this list goes on and guess what!? I get it, I’ve had a dark childhood too, which I wrote and shared about in my 2018 book release:

Beautiful Disaster: The Identity Crisis Within

But, I want to encourage you today, that life is more beautiful than your past, present, and current circumstances. The ‘inner child’ and its relevance in adult psychological health determines the way we function as adults, and this is why therapy, can very well be your “Best friend“. Childhood trauma affects how we think, feel, and act. It also determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices throughout life. We’ve all faced some kind of unfairness due to the brokenness that lives within humanity. Hurt people, hurt people and I want you to make a conscious decision, to be the change maker starting today. Can you commit to that? Great!

Studies have shown the impact of childhood trauma and neglect on long-term emotional well-being drives us to harmful behaviors like addiction, promiscuity, and the ability to cause harm to others and ourselves. More often than not, we truly don’t know, how to pick what’s healthy because we were never taught correctly. We have a screwed vision and interpretation of what LOVE looks like however, if you are willing to unlearn and re-learn through the love of God, you can change the course of your relationships. Granted people can still oppose their will but you can become better for YOU.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV

Here are some principles of inner childhood healing and how it aids in personal growth and development:

  • Forgive yourself for what you didn’t know and understand.
  • Forgive those who’ve hurt you and mistreated you. (Parents, siblings, family ect.)
  • Understand that forgiveness DOES NOT mean restoration.
  • Release yourself from being bitter and angry (this also releases their hold over your life)
  • Know that All things can still work together for your good.
  • Commit to your well-being and inner healing.
  • Remember GOD is the judge and vengeance belongs to Him alone.
  • Pray for your enemies.

You may not see it now, however; your destiny is tied to your healing, personal growth, and spiritual development. God has called you, to set those free who’ve walked through the same path as you. You’ve been equipped with life lessons, wisdom, and experiences to be an example and beacon of Christ’s light, to a lost and dying world. When we allow God to change our perspective on any unfair treatment, we can be a solution to those around us. People are hurting, and you have the answers locked up inside you, waiting to be released.

Jephthah’s Journey: From Rejection to Self-Discovery

I want to introduce you to a young man named Jephthah, whose childhood was full of neglect and societal rejection.

In the story of Jephthah, the bible tells us he was a Mighty Man of Valour, the son of a prostitute. He was thrown out and rejected by his siblings, and he didn’t receive the inheritance of his father’s house. He hung out among the worthless intentionally and those who were less worthy. He lived a bilious lifestyle due to the pain and rejection of his family, but he had an eternal heritage that he didn’t realize was there, since birth. Eventually, he was needed to fulfill his destiny assignment. After a season had passed, the people from his village came to get him in their distress because they needed his GIFT to work for them. God moved through Jephthah as he was given the victory and reigned for six years. (Judges 11-12) How awesome is our God? A bitter beginning that worked out for his ultimate good…you may have been rejected by man but God has the power, and the final say over your worth, not man.

The societal implications of being an outcast and aligning with the ‘worthless’: are forms of unhealthy survival. Some people simply do NOT desire change or want to help their circumstances but there is also an important skill we must display, empathy and understanding towards all humanity when addressing the stories of those dealt a harsh hand by life and society, you have the voice to make a change and reshape perspectives.

Embracing the Inner Child: Strategies for Healing and Growth

  • Take small actionable steps for initiating your inner child healing journey (be kind to yourself and others)
  • Use Jephthah’s narrative to inspire strength and resilience in the face of adversity. He had greatness on the inside of him, no matter what it looked like or what family he was born into.
  • There is power in self-reflection, acceptance, and the courage to confront the past, don’t allow fear to grip you because of past mistakes.
  • Integrate journaling, professional guidance, and self-help techniques through the word of God.
  • Emphasize the continuous nature of healing and the joy of rediscovering oneself, you had a destiny and future before anyone had an opinion.
